Welcome to this month’s Cabaret Reporter, where we are always happy to report when scene stars are making the news.
Two of our favourites have recently announced they are making their debut on the silver screen. Both Myra DuBois and Son of a Tutu have confirmed they are part of the cast for the film version of the smash hit British musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, that also features Richard E Grant. The film is expected to be released in 2020. Another popular UK act with big news to share is Keith George, also known as both Mandy Gap and The Boy George Experience. Keith was recently given a lifetime achievement award in Las Vegas and three awards at the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Impersonators in Florida, all for his Boy George show and he’s performing at The Tenerife Entertainment Awards on October 13. Congratulations Keith. Following the reveal of the acts taking part in the first series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, it’s now been confirmed that the UK will be getting it’s very own and official RuPaul Drag Con at Olympia in London on 18 January and 19 January 2020 complete with panels, shows, special guests and much more. Of course not everyone has welcomed the show’s all male line-up and on Wednesday 3 October The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is host to The Anti Drag Race Revolution, a night to celebrate the kinds of acts not allowed on the show including many amazing female cabaret stars, hosted by Chiyo.
Many scene faces and cabaret acts were at the Two Brewers to celebrate General Manager Jimmy Smith’s recent birthday. We are forbidden to tell you everything that went on, but we can confirm that definitely was Strictly and This Morning star Dr. Ranj Singh and friends doing the Proud Mary routine on stage with Miss Penny, who then went on to do an impromptu version of Enough is Enough, the Donna Summer/Barbra Streisand duet with Sandra, who was only halfway through getting changed. If your heading to Gran Canaria for some fun in the winter sun, you’ll be pleased to hear that Tanya Hyde, Miss Jason, Mary Mac, KY Kelly and Sandra will all be in Maspalomas for the first weekend in October as part of Ricky’s Bar’s Winter Warmer. Jason Reid has confirmed that both Holestar and Asifa LaHore will be performing alongside hosts Michael Twaits and Son of a Tutu at the QX Cabaret Awards, taking place at Hungerford House, the home of Circa The Club. Tutu is also one of the acts taking part in a Bake Off themed fundraiser for The Food Chain at The RVT, with Felix Le Freak, Tracy La Bouche, The Vixens and hosted by Mynxie on Friday 15 November. Talking of TV, was that really Arthur Darvill, aka Rory from Doctor Who spotted watching the marvellous Cynthia Seaward and clearly loving it… who knew he had the range!
Finally, if the history our scene interests you and honestly it really should, you can help the team at Duckie with their queer history project, Princess 1719. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, infamous queer academic and archivist E-J Scott is leading a team of pioneering volunteers into the archives to see what they have been keeping from us all of these years. Be warned, this is not one of those nice BBC history projects with Lucy Wolsley about posh people and the Royals, this is Filth. If you want to take part send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and join the history gang.
